While there is some drama involved with AAOMR right now, I believe all that will blow over. Business has been steady. Growth has slowed down a little, but talking with colleagues it seems like that is the trend in every aspect of the dental world.

So where are things right now? I haven’t grown my business this year as much as the previous years, but there was still growth. The profession overall remains very satisfying. Income has gone up, although prices remain steady. But with the way the economy is looking, there may be some price hikes coming up.

I would say, life is good.

  1. What drama is currently going on with the AAOMR? I’m applying this upcoming cycle and am just trying to keep updated on the direction of the field.

  2. Well, due to mismanagement of the examination board (ABOMR), we are at risk of losing our specialty. Now I think this will blow over, but just the fact that we ever got to this point is a huge disappointment.

  3. Hello,
Is it typical to begin a private practice OMR career full-time immediately after graduation from residency? What do the first 5 years of a career typically look like?
    Thank you as always.

  4. That’s a good question that I unfortunately don’t have any data to really answer. I think for most they end up working in either academics or something like Beamreaders, but I see no reason not to open your own practice at the same time. You can do both.

  5. Appreciate the answer. Does Beamreaders have a monopoly or are there comparably-sized competitors? Do these companies have enough volume to sustain a full time career, for those interested primarily in private practice?

  6. BR is a huge player in the game. It’s not the only one for sure but probably the biggest. Most of these companies can bring in volume for you, but at some point you will need to get referrals.

Right now I feel like there’s an overall slow down in the field to be honest. It came suddenly once the political landscape changed.

  8. Ok, thank you for clarifying.

I’d be very interested in a post about the changing landscape since the election.
